Snowshoes

My wife and I had the opportunity to run away to a couple's retreat up in Northern Minnesota over the Valentine weekend.
While we were there we strapped on some snowshoes and flopped around like ducks over the deep snow.
We were just getting the hang of it when we ventured out onto the frozen lake.
Suddenly it was a different story. It was everything we could muster to keep from doing the splits, and it felt like we were polar bears on clumsy ice skates as we used muscles we've never used before in our legs....just to stay standing. Even then, staying still was a mistake.
We learned very quickly that we had to pick up our feet and not drag our heels. Putting a little bounce into our step, the bear-claw teeth on the underside of the snowshoes would bite down into the ice and grab, and we could literally jog across this frozen landscape almost in sync, stable and sure-footed. It was when we stopped, when we drug our heels, and when we took our eyes off the path in front of us that we floundered like drunken sailors.

The next morning we were reading in the bible about a few of the promises God makes, and what I found interesting was that they weren't promises for just anyone to take hold of. They weren't freebies, they were more like rewards.

In Matthew 28, Christ ends the book with the promise that He will be with us always, but only after He teaches us to go out and make disciples, to baptize and to teach them to obey all of His commands.

In Psalms 112 he says we're blessed. But it's not that we're all just mindlessly and anonymously blessed. It's the upright, the gracious, the compassionate, and the righteous man. It's the man who fears the Lord that finds great delight in His commands. We had a top-notch chef serving us 5-course meals, food and smells and tastes that literally kept us on the edge of our seats like giddy school children waiting for the next surprise. We understood exactly what it meant to delight at that point. So, when it comes to the teaching of Christ, in the commands and the law of the bible, we're supposed to approach them not begrudgingly or as if they are some sort of mundane chore, but with delight.

With our faith, our daily walk, it's really just like our adventure in those snowshoes. Faith can carry us over the deep snow and keep us floating almost magically on top of the dips and the crevices, but when it comes to the hard road, to the real tests, you can't just casually drag your heels in that same ho-hum manner, and just as importantly, you can't stand still, because you'll still fall down. You have to focus, use muscles that you may have never known you had, and you have to pick up your feet by putting a little bounce in your step. It's a step of faith, because it seems crazy to 'leap' just then, but it's then and only then, in that rhythm of a cadence, that you see the strength of what faith in Christ is really meant for. You discover the purpose for His love as those teeth, sharper and harder than any obstacle in your path, dig in and bite down.
Suddenly your moving right along, and the wind is in your face. You have a direction, you have a goal, and you're going to reach a place that at first seemed impossible given the conditions, because you're trusting in those shoes to take you there.
And there's the beauty of it all. Those promises that He will be with us always, those blessings, that strength and that delight, they become more than just words on a page. They are truly the teeth of our faith that carry us soundly through life.

Heidi & Jarod in the Blizzard

We left a day early for Heidi and Jarod's wedding, with warnings all over the radio and the television about a big blizzard bearing down. Rather than be found on Heidi's wedding day somewhere along the side of a lonely country road, me and my anxiety decided we were going to leave early and get a hotel room an hour closer. Of course, rather than watch me pace the floor, Kari agreed we should pack up and get on the road. Another minute of me biting my nails was going to drive her bonkers, so off we went and made a mini-date night out of the trip.

The next morning in the hotel room we started out early just as the edges of the storm began to creep over the horizon. The temperature was dropping and the wind was picking up with a definite bite to the air. As the fog of the blizzard overtook us, I stopped to shoot some footage of the giant wind turbines that were dipping into view just off the highway, eerily swooping into sight from out of the clouds, then gone again, vanished into the fog with no more than a whisper.

Clear roads turned to black ice just as we rolled into town. A few moments later, there was Heidi in jeans, a flanel, furry snowboots and a veil, checking on her unity candle and gorgeous as ever. Not even in her dress and the girl takes your breath away more than even the chilly morning air.

We braved the storm at Heidi's request and shot some beautiful outdoor scenes, with our bride snuggled up to her man as close as possible.

At the beginning of the ceremony, only a few inches had fallen, but in those moments of bliss during the wedding, none of us realized what was happening outside.

After the kiss we were out the door and right into the worst of the blizzard. Visibility dropped to zero as I shot images of the hardest working ushers I've ever seen, breaking out the snow shovels to clear the way for the guests.

We told the limo bus driver we'd be right behind them for the 20 mile trek to the reception hall, and we stuck by our word, right up to the point that she passed a car, going uphill, in a white-out blizzard, doing 50 on black ice. One by one we watched cars pull over as people turned around to try and make it back to the last town. Coming around a sharp corner I barely made out 2 pairs of headlights, then suddenly realized they were both coming straight at us. I pumped the brakes, turned the wheel, hit the gas, touched the brakes, and finally cranked the wheel the other direction while hitting the gas one last time. We performed a beautiful 'S' on the highway, as if we were in some kind of ice-skating number. The whole time I could hear Kari praying, except all that was coming out was "Lord! Lord! Lord!" I think He got the message anyway, as we missed the oncoming car by about 3 inches. All I could say for about 2 minutes was, 'That idiot was trying to pass, in a white-out blizzard, while going around a corner!' I think I said that about 3 times.

Believe it or not we actually caught up to our limo bus driver just as she pulled into town, and the rest of the night the couple was glowing. Guests were thrilled to be warm and eating great food, and Heidi and Jarod heated the place up with their fast-moving jitterbug on the dance floor.

Heidi also played a special slide show for her dad during their dance together and we got to snap some of our favorite father-daughter shots. It was all worth it in the end to see a father holding his little girl as the images of their history rolled by, and we were grateful to have memories with Heidi and Jarod of an extraordinary wedding day.

Champ

My boy participated in his first ever regional bible competition today. He took the highest score possible and walked away the champion quizzer. His team also took first place and gets to go to Fargo now for the finals. Unlike his daddy, on stage my boy was confident and sure of himself. There wasn't even a hint of a tremble in his voice when he approached the microphone to answer his questions.
My favorite part was when he got his 2 high-honor ribbons, his champion quizzer ribbon, and the medal for placing first as a team. He came back to his chair calmly, sat down, and studied everything closely. His little sister, on the other hand, was too elated to just sit in her chair without congratulating him, and so she had to rush up and join him. She's his biggest fan you see, so she sat next to him for the rest of the ceremony with ants in her pants, wriggling with excitement, in total bliss about her big brother's win.
:)
It was a good day.

Pictures, Words & Sounds...

So, yes, we're a photography studio, but now and then the other currents that make up the river of my life take over. In this case, lately, it's the words and sounds.
For those of you musically-geared and hot-wired for composition, here's a song I've written. Not for you to just sit back and listen to because then you'd only ever hear it one way, but for you to pick it up, to turn it over and juggle it around in your mind, to play with the message, to make it your voice you hear and not another.
Sometimes there is a war in me of expression, between these three currents. Some days, more than others, a picture is the only way I can tell you the story. Now and then there is the blog and only words will do. And for years this last well has been too deep to draw up anything worth quenching my spirit, but lately the sounds, the music, has described something I've yet to grasp. I think it's the three coming together. It's the pictures merging with the words and becoming the sound I hear only in my soul, and maybe it has to be that way for me to fully tell the story.

Here is that story for today, both in song for those of you who will grab a guitar or go to the piano, and also in prose for those of you who simply won't :)

Prose:

My King

It’s not about the money
that you’ve made.
It’s not about the road
you think you’ve paved.

It’s not your house.
It’s not your car.
Those things don’t make you
the man that you are.

And those clothes on your back,
they don’t mean a thing
to the only,
the one true King.

‘Cause my King,
He sees a flower in the field,
He says it’s more beautiful
than anything we could build.

And my King,
oh He looks into your soul.
There’s nothing about you
He doesn’t already know.
Oh that’s my King.

His book tells me
you’re the same as every man.
When His law shines down
you’ll be just as stained with sin.

My king hung there.
He knew the cost.
My king says the price was paid
when He died upon that cross.

‘Cause my King,
He sees a flower in the field.
He says it’s more beautiful
than anything we could build.

And my King,
He looks into your soul.
There’s nothing about you
He doesn’t already know.

Someone gives you a gift
and did your mama ever say
you should throw it in their face,
just turn and walk away?

But still it’s up to you
so what’s it gonna be?
Your choice is guaranteed
To last an eternity.

‘Cause my King,
He sees a flower in the field.
He says it’s more beautiful
than anything we could build.

And my King,
He looks into your soul.
There’s nothing about you
He doesn’t already know.

Do you wanna know my King?
Don’t you wanna know your King?
Do you wanna know the one true King?
